SCREENWRITING

Short Film: Passing By

The narrative path that this work takes is inspired by a headline in the Los Angeles Times that reads, “Letters to the Editor: ‘That could be me’ is an odd reason to advocate for disabled people”. This typical sympathy is one that many use to grab a hold of an umbrella as wide as the subject of disability, but it is poorly executed. Disability is a layer of identity  that society considers an addition or subtraction from an a person, rather than a part of them, and this script explores the implications of the biases that creates bystanders.

Other works have informed this piece as well, including articles that describe the stories of Kenneth French, a 32 year old man with a cognitive disability who was killed by an off-duty LAPD officer, as well as the story of “John”, an unarmed homeless man in Venice Beach who has been shot and killed by the police for being “belligerent and loud”.  These stories have been synthesized into fiction that is reflects these realities and influence the incidents that the Bystander witnesses.

ABOUT

ABOUT

Creating equity in a workspace is something I believe to be imperative to have a successful company. As an aspiring casting director, my goals stretch beyond personal growth. What I want to bring to the table of any workspace I am a part of is the effort towards opportunity, and creating media is a crucial element that determines what faces are seen and represented. I believe there are plenty more faces to show.

Throughout my work in casting and creating, I have gained skills and information to lend towards my career that can bring a broader spectrum of people to media and performance. As a graduate of Emerson's Media Arts Production program with a minor in Public Health, I am motivated by issues addressed in this range of subjects. Some of my experiences in work and education include studying portrayals of disability in media, subjects in sex education, as well as American healthcare. By combining the process of creating a production with this additional support of healthcare education, I plan to use my set of skills to be a part of a projects that are inclusive of all possible identities, appearances, and conditions, and to support that group of talent in our collaborative work.
